The continuing pandemic, coupled with tariffs, natural disasters and other shortages, has caused a global supply chain nightmare. Nearly every industry has felt the effects — including HVAC contractors. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction Index, a record-high percentage (95%) of contractors experienced at least one product shortage in Q4 2021, up 24 points from the previous year. Steel topped the list at 27%.
How does this impact commercial HVAC customers throughout the country?
First, customers should be aware that shortages of raw materials — like steel, copper, plastics, concrete and wood, in addition to semiconductors — significantly slow down the manufacturing of furnaces and other equipment that keep your building comfortable for occupants. Wait times for certain equipment have extended into several weeks or more. Even as small shipments of the parts we need slowly trickle in, they’re gone in a flash to the next on the waiting list.
To help combat challenges within the supply chain, some contractors have been able to build up their inventory of in-demand parts and equipment by ordering a surplus well in advance. Others have extended their network of trusted partners to help ease availability issues for customers. But more can be done, and it centers around preventive maintenance.
To avoid a full system breakdown or other critical issue this winter, customers must be proactive about maintaining their HVAC systems. That means checking and changing air filters on a monthly basis, keeping exterior units clean, checking ductwork, cleaning evaporator and condenser coils and regularly checking all system controls. Not only will these steps help boost your system’s performance and reduce costs, they’ll keep your building from being left in the cold (literally).
